Hares stuffed and baked in Old Moseley Arms Fit Men assault

From our Special St Helena Correspondent in his last Sunday game before jetting (and sailing) off to the middle of the ocean comes a thorough match report and potted version for those suffering from ADHD. To celebrate the return of the Great British Bake Off, Barford’s very own Mel and Sue (Will and Shawn) produced their very own showstopper to give Jon the send-off we all know he truly deserved…

Jon: having his cake, and eating it

I have been told that my previous match report was too long and with too many big words. I have decided to ignore those comments and carry on as normal. There will be a shortened version at the end for those with an insufficient attention span/intelligence to read the proper version.

Despite the efforts on Mother Nature over the previous two days, Barford were fortunate enough to get a game played, albeit on the artificial wicket.

Barford fielded first, hoping that the intermittent cloud and stiff breeze would aid their legion of swing bowlers. Laurence Boyce and Gary Dunn (3-0-18-0) opened the bowling, but were unable to prevent Old Moseley plundering the Powerplay overs. The introduction of Simon Hawkins, with some miserly back of a length bowling, helped stem the tide. Captain Griffin then brought himself on, which proved to be an inspired change as he picked up 2 wickets in 2 overs.

The middle overs saw spin brought on from one end and Shaun Harrison from the other. Shaun bowled tidily for his first 3 overs, picking up a wicket stumped by Lambdon. Richard Jones was unlucky not to claim any scalps as his 5 overs cost 36 runs. Ben wisely took Shaun off before he could revert to type, and the introduction of Paul Henderson (5-0-24-2) paid dividends as he picked up 2 wickets courtesy of excellent catches from Laurence and Will Perry in the deep.

Andy Hawkins only bowled the two overs (2-0-17-0), but with the batsmen starting to tee off, Laurence was reintroduced and bowled with pace and swing from a full length, picking up two wickets in his last over to finish with figures of 7-1-39-2. Will and wicketkeeper Jon Lambdon combined in spectacular fashion to effect a run out to further dent the Moseley charge to the finish. Ben’s figures were tarnished somewhat as his only comeback over disappeared for 11 runs leaving him with 6-2-25-2. “Pah, that’s nothing, watch how many these go for!” said Shaun as his second spell of 3 overs cost an eye watering 38 runs (total: 6-0-48-1). Old Moseley posting an imposing total of 251.

Paul and Andy opening the batting – with the latter only contributing the one run before being out caught. With Ben in at 3, Barford put on 44 for the second wicket, but went from 51-1 to 51-4 with Paul (9) and Ben (24) getting out in the same over. Simon Drage joined Will at the crease with some sound advice to bat sensibly and build a partnership. He may have forgotten that they both needed to follow this plan as an agricultural hoik to his third ball led to his first duck of the season. Laurence was sent in with the instructions to have a swing and try and provide the impetus to get the innings back on track. Unfortunately, it was more impotence than impetus as he was bowled first ball.

The wagginess of the Barford tail was less than required, with Simon Hawkins (1), Shaun (9) and Gary (3) all departed in quick succession. Richard joined Jon at the crease for the final pairing needed only 131 to win off the last 12 overs. Could they see Barford home? Would the boundaries rain down and provide hope for the spectators? Could they restore Barford pride? No, no and no turned out to be the answers as Richard edged behind for a duck, leaving Jon stranded agonisingly short of his maiden 50 (on 8*).

Result: Old Moseley win by 128 runs. Lambdon MOM, S Hawkins TFC.

Short version:

They scored too many runs.
We didn’t take enough wickets.
We didn’t score enough runs.
They took enough wickets.
We lost.

Video: Attack with Simon Drage

The next in our video series, he barely needs any introduction.

A run machine, part-time quizmaster, full-time social secretary and the ‘Safest hands in Cricket’, he knows only one way of playing and that’s Attack, Attack, Attack!

Enjoy Simon Drage like no-one else has.

Video: Batting with Sandy Peirson

First in an occasional series of videos highlighting Barford’s team-members and their talents.

This week it’s the turn of our chairman, wicket-keeper, batsman and bon-viveur Sandy Peirson demonstrating how to bat (and get run out…)

Skipper Griffin’s Nap-ton sees Hares to convincing victory

From our correspondent Simon H:

Barford notched up a big win at Napton today, thanks to a sensational maiden century from Ben, and despite Shawn dropping a catch and then kicking the ball over the boundary like Barry Chuckle.

Napton nightmares no more

It would be fair to say that Napton has not been a happy hunting ground for the Hares in recent years, and batting first was a gamble on a wicket that always offers variable bounce. Chris O’Reilly and Richard Johnson opened and made steady progress before both falling with the score on 19.

Ben Griffin: expectant father, ton-up skipper (file photo)

That bought Ben to the crease and he started slowly, taking 15 balls to get off the mark. Will, Shawn and Simon D failed to impose themselves at the other end, and we were “staring down the barrel” with the score on 66-5 at the halfway mark. Napton were bowling accurately and the constant danger of shooters and leapers made it hard to play shots with confidence, but Ben gradually picked up the scoring rate, whilst playing watchfully for his 50.

Captain Fantastic

Simon H, Phil, Laurence and Jon all came and went at the other end with varying degrees of success, as Ben began to hit out. Last man Timmsy came to the wicket with Ben’s score still in the 70’s and tension mounted in the Barford dressing room as he hit boundaries and farmed the strike. There was a nail biting moment when Tony was facing a new over, with Ben on 96, but the veteran tweaker snatched a single in a style that has yet to bother any known coaching manual, and Ben then biffed the runs that took him over 100. He ended on 110 not out, having shared a last wicket partnership of 42 with Tony, who scored just that 1. The team score was 188 and that looked a lot on a difficult track.

Ben’s ton came off 107 balls, with 18 fours and 2 sixes. 110 is the tenth highest score in the club’s history.

Ben 1-Ten

Despite some early big hitting, Napton never really looked like chasing down the total and wickets fell regularly. Laurence was the pick of the Barford bowlers with 6-19-3, including a sensational slip catch by Chris O’Reilly. Simon H, Richard Johnson, Ben, Shawn and Jon all chipped in with a wicket each, before Tony inevitably mopped up the last 2 wickets for 3 runs. Napton were 109 all out, one run less than Ben’s score.

More importantly, we had an excellent tea followed by chicken curry at the Victory Social Club in Napton.

Behind the scenes with BCC, tour preps and caption competition

With less than a month to go before the tour, Messrs Herring and O’Reilly have been spotted warming up on the beach in their ‘half thong mankinis’ in a manner similar to our TOWIE friends Bobby and Harry.

Here at Barfordcc.org.uk we’ll be with you every step of the way as the build-up continues, providing exclusive insights and content to the most hotly awaited sporting contest of the year.

Apart from the World Cup.
And the test series against Sri Lanka and India.
And Wimbledon.
And the golf.
And the rugby.
And the Commonwealth Games.

But anyway in the mean time our spy in the camp has captured our illustrious Chairman giving our Secretary just a bloke giving another bloke a helping hand to get it on. Your captions welcome…

The boys are back in town…welcome back Will and Shawn

After what seems like literally hours of work and exams at ‘university’, Barford CC welcome back the greatest youth policy signings since the Manchester United “you can’t win anything with kids” double winning side of 1995-96.

We managed to catch up with them during a lull in their hectic playboy lifestyle to hand over their prizes, but who can forget their rapid runs, dramatic wickets and ferocious fielding which netted them award after award at the dinner last year?

shawnandwillawards

And then of course there is their devilish good looks, which if their Facebook activity is anything to go by, make them a great hit with the ladies of Plymouth.

If you missed it the first time around here they are accepting those awards, live – via satellite / webcam.

Lock up your daughters, as the great Michael Buffer would say “Let’s get ready to rumblllllleeeeeee” (and form an orderly queue at the Badsey away dressing room on Sunday ladies…)

Morgan gets Barford’s 2014 season well and truly under way…

..with two barnstorming Sunday losses against Marton and Kineton! But never mind, we got to see Barford’s newest opener, Simon Morgan, refusing to leave anything in the locker in getting his 9 runs against a youthful Kineton.  But no-one picked his total in the sweepstake, so it’s a rollover…

Watch as his magnificent strokes almost get to the boundary…

And commiserate as he gets out to one that even he couldn’t get down to (in Sloooo-moooo toooo)…
