In what was a gorgeous day, Barford rocked up at the beautiful Temple Grafton ground to be greeted by a youthful and fit looking Grafton team supported by a few ringers from Ashorne. I should say here that I don’t have a copy of the scorebook and the following is a rough guide from my memory of the game.

Skipper Drage after winning the toss decided to bat first and try to put some runs on the board. Opening pairing of Drage and Pierson soon started doing this and after 14 overs had put over 100 runs on the board (the first time this has happened In the last six years). Sandy finally went for an excellent 30 odd and Drage followed after scoring 56 and we were about 120 for 2 at drinks.

Linfield and Beaven picked up the mantle In the second half and continued to score well. James went for around 20 before Gill, Prince, and Harry Hawkins all went cheaply. Linfield was still there though and became the second player of the day to reach his half century before falling on 53. The team total had passed 200 before the final over of the day saw Tim smash three four’s and take our final score to 221 for 8. A superb all round batting performance.

Over an excellent tea provided by out hosts skipper Drage plotted how to go about the second half of the game. Jolly and Beaven led the attack but were both empty handed after 10 overs. The change saw Linfield and Jack Hawkins firing In and they were both soon amongst the wickets. At drinks Grafton were about 100 for 3 so the game was pretty evenly balanced. Harry Hawkins and dad Andy had a go from the restart and this proved to be an inspired move as they were both soon taking wickets which In turn slowed the Grafton scoring rate and left them needing 10 runs an over from the final six of the innings.

This was something they failed to do as wickets continued to fall with AndyHawkins being the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. After a superb all round bowling and fielding performance Temple Grafton were restricted to around 185 for 9 at the end of there innings. Well that’s how I remember how things happened. Well done to everyone.

Cheers.

Simon International.
