After losing the toss skipper International was asked to field. This was always going
to be difficult as we only had 9 players at the start as Steve had been held up and
Ben was being questioned by the police after breaking into his place of work. So
the skipper turned to Paul Stacey and Simon Hawkins to open the bowling. Paul
was his usual hostile self and went for only a few runs from his overs while Simon
who was not quite so lively but very accurate and clean bowled both the Harbury openers.
The change bought James Beaven and Paul Johnstone into the attack and both
were neat and tidy. There were obviously gaps in the field as we still only had 9 guy’s on
the pitch and Harbury were starting to get going but before they actually got anywhere
Pj removed the next one, again clean bowled and this game was going to be close.
Steve turned up and was immediately asked to bowl along with Gary Dunn. If I could
get four tight overs from these guy’s then we were going to be in with a shout.
Although Steve struggled a bit in a swirling wind to find a line and length from the
other end Gary literally shut them out. When I say swirling wind I mean SWIRLING
WIND. I know we have dropped catches before but never 6 or was it 7 in the one
game, ha ha. Still the guy’s had bowled superbly and fielded brilliantly if you forget
about the catches and in what were really horrible conditions Harbury had finished
on only 109 from their allocated overs.

Was that going to be enough ?. We would soon find out.

Opening the batting was Jake and Chris and they again set off at an electrifying pace
and at the end of the 4th over we were on 32 without loss. Chris got out in the next
over to the only catch of the game and this bought PJ to the crease. A flick here and
a push there and he was quickly on the move. Jake was retired on 25 ( well batted )
and James joined PJ in the middle. It was around now that the heavens opened in a
biblical sense and the game was under serious threat of being called off. However
being so close yet still so far away from another victory the boys refused to walk off.
In trying for a quick single James got run out and Paul Stacey was next in. For fear of
drowning ( yeah it was raining that bad ) Paul started swinging and cracked some
great shots including a much needed 6, and aided by a few wides and no balls we
found ourselves needing 12 off the final two overs. With the two Paul’s at the crease
and both playing so well surely this was a dead cert ?. Of course it wasn’t, this is
Barford I am talking about and there is no such thing as a dead cert. So in the
blinding rain with one 8 ball over remaining we only needed 7.

Ball 1. = Dot.
Ball 2. = Dot.
Ball 3. = One.
Ball 4. = Four.
Ball 5. = Dot.
Ball 6. = Dot.
Ball 7. = Two. Yes a two to win us the game with a ball to spare.

It was an incredible all round team performance. To be down in numbers and have
to battle against the elements as well as the opposition and come out on top makes
me so proud of the guy’s and the spirit that is within the team at the moment.

Well that’s how I remember it happened.

A big shout out to Simon Hawkins for being the first to arrive and the last to leave.
To Gary and Chris for umpiring the game in such horrible wet conditions and to
Layla for sitting through it all scoring for both teams and for bringing cake for everyone.

Cheers.

Simon International.
